Acanthurus nigrofuscus

The Acanthurus nigrofuscus, commonly known as the Brown Tang, Lavender Tang, or Spot-Cheeked Surgeonfish, is a hardy and relatively peaceful species, making it one of the easier tangs to care for in a home aquarium.

Description

Aquarium Requirements:

  • Tank Size: 100+ gallons (380+ liters) to allow for active swimming.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C)
    • pH: 8.1–8.4
    • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
    • Water Flow: Moderate to strong (well-oxygenated water).

Size & Lifespan:

  • Adult Size: Up to 8 inches (20 cm).
  • Lifespan: 8–12 years with proper care.

Behavior & Tank Mates:

  • Generally peaceful, but can be territorial toward other tangs if not introduced properly.
  • Best kept alone or in a group (if the tank is large enough).
  • Compatible with:
    • Other peaceful to semi-aggressive fish like clownfish, wrasses, gobies, and angelfish.
    • Can cohabitate with other tangs in very large tanks (150+ gallons) if introduced at the same time.
  • Reef-safe—does not harm corals, making it a good choice for reef aquariums.

Diet & Feeding:

  • Herbivorous—requires a diet rich in marine algae.
  • Feed multiple times daily with:
    • Dried or fresh seaweed (nori)
    • Spirulina-based flakes and pellets
    • Vegetable-based frozen foods
    • Occasionally accepts mysis shrimp and brine shrimp, but plant matter should dominate.

Additional Care Tips:

  • Less aggressive than many other tangs, making it a great choice for community saltwater tanks.
  • Prone to marine ich and lateral line erosion—keep water quality high and provide a vitamin-enriched diet.
  • Needs plenty of swimming space and hiding spots to feel secure.
  • One of the best tangs for beginners, as it is hardier and less aggressive than species like the Powder Blue or Clown Tang.
