The Acanthurus triostegus, commonly known as the Convict Tang or Convict Surgeonfish, is a hardy, peaceful, and highly active fish that is one of the easier tang species to care for. Its striking black-and-white striped body resembles a convict’s uniform, giving it its common name.

Description

Aquarium Requirements:

  • Tank Size: 125+ gallons (475+ liters) for a single specimen; larger for groups.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C)
    • pH: 8.1–8.4
    • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
    • Water Flow: Moderate to strong (well-oxygenated).

Size & Lifespan:

  • Adult Size: Up to 10 inches (25 cm).
  • Lifespan: 7–10 years with proper care.

Behavior & Tank Mates:

  • One of the most peaceful tangs, making it ideal for community tanks.
  • Can be kept alone or in groups (requires a large tank for multiple specimens).
  • Compatible with:
    • Other tangs (less aggressive species like the Yellow Tang or Kole Tang).
    • Clownfish, wrasses, gobies, and angelfish.
    • Reef-safe—does not harm corals, making it great for reef aquariums.

Diet & Feeding:

  • Herbivorous, requiring a plant-rich diet.
  • Feed multiple times daily with:
    • Dried or fresh seaweed (nori)
    • Spirulina-based flakes and pellets
    • Vegetable-based frozen foods
    • Occasionally accepts mysis shrimp and brine shrimp, but plant matter should dominate.

Additional Care Tips:

  • Less aggressive than most tangs, making it a good option for mixed-species tanks.
  • Active swimmer—requires plenty of open space.
  • Prone to marine ich, so quarantine before introducing to the display tank.
  • Best kept in well-established tanks with plenty of live rock for grazing.
