Aquarium Requirements:

  • Tank Size: 180+ gallons (680+ liters) recommended for adult specimens.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C)

    • pH: 8.1–8.4

    • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

    • Water Flow: Moderate to strong (needs oxygen-rich water).

Size & Lifespan:

  • Adult Size: Up to 15 inches (38 cm) in the wild; slightly smaller in captivity.

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years or more with proper care.

Behavior & Tank Mates:

  • Generally peaceful, but may be territorial with other tangs or similarly shaped fish.

  • Best housed alone or with peaceful to semi-aggressive species in a large tank.

  • Compatible with:

    • Clownfish, wrasses, gobies, butterflyfish, angelfish

    • Other tangs, if introduced carefully and in a large enough system.

  • Reef-safe – does not harm corals but may disturb inverts while grazing.

Diet & Feeding:

  • Primarily herbivorous, grazing on algae throughout the day.

  • Feed several times daily:

    • Dried or fresh seaweed (nori)

    • Spirulina flakes/pellets

    • Frozen herbivore blends

    • Occasional mysis or brine shrimp for variety

Additional Care Notes:

  • Needs plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding.

  • A strong swimmer—open space is essential.

  • Prone to marine ich—quarantine is recommended before adding to display tanks.

  • As with all tangs, maintain excellent water quality and provide a varied, plant-based diet.
