Coris aygula, Clown Coris

Aquarium Pets

The Coris aygula, commonly known as the clown coris or twinspot wrasse, is a large and fascinating species of wrasse found in the Indo-Pacific region. As juveniles, they are especially striking with a white body marked by bold black spots on the tail that resemble eyes, giving them the name “twinspot.” These spots help deter predators by mimicking a larger animal. Juvenile clown coris also feature a slender body and vibrant red-orange patches that make them popular in the aquarium trade. However, as they mature, their appearance changes dramatically—they lose the twin tail spots, and their coloration deepens into shades of green, blue, and black with vivid markings on the face and fins.

Adult coris aygula can reach lengths of up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) in the wild, though they’re usually smaller in captivity. They’re active, intelligent fish with a curious nature, often seen turning over rocks or digging in the substrate in search of crustaceans and other invertebrates, which make up the bulk of their carnivorous diet. This foraging behavior means they require a large aquarium with plenty of open space and a sandy bottom, as they like to bury themselves at night or when stressed. While they can be peaceful when young, adult clown coris may become territorial and are not considered reef-safe, as they will likely eat ornamental invertebrates.

Due to their size and active nature, coris aygula are best suited for experienced marine aquarists who can provide a tank of at least 180 gallons or more. They thrive in stable water conditions with temperatures between 24–28°C (75–82°F) and a pH of 8.1–8.4. With proper care, they can live for over a decade and become charismatic centerpieces in large marine displays.
