The Pomacanthus asfur, commonly known as the Asfur Angelfish or Arabian Angelfish, is a striking marine fish with a deep blue body and a bright yellow patch. It is a popular but challenging species to keep in a home aquarium.

Aquarium Requirements:

  • Tank Size: 180+ gallons (680+ liters) due to its large adult size and active nature.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C)
    • pH: 8.1–8.4
    • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
    • Water Flow: Moderate to strong

Size & Lifespan:

  • Adult Size: Up to 16 inches (40 cm)
  • Lifespan: 15–20 years with proper care

Behavior & Tank Mates:

  • Semi-aggressive—territorial towards other angelfish, especially in smaller tanks.
  • Best kept alone or with large, semi-aggressive tank mates like tangs, triggers, and large wrasses.
  • Not reef-safe—will nip at corals, sponges, and invertebrates.

Diet & Feeding:

  • Omnivorous—requires a balanced diet:
    • Marine algae & seaweed
    • Sponges & tunicates (available in angelfish-specific foods)
    • Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill
    • High-quality pellets & flakes enriched with vitamins
  • Feed 2–3 times daily for optimal health and coloration.

Additional Care Tips:

  • Needs plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
  • Can be shy when first introduced but becomes bold over time.
  • Prone to marine diseases (like ich)—quarantine before introducing to a display tank.
  • Requires excellent water quality and regular maintenance.
